A Note from OSINTAnalyst.com: Bleak weather remains in place after three ice-breakers tried and failed to reach the 74 scientists, tourists, and crew stuck since Christmas Eve.  Discussing a statement from maritime authorities, Fox News says, “the helicopter must wait for a break in the weather before it can attempt a rescue, and conditions aren’t expected to improve before Wednesday.”  The crew on the ship will remain even after a rescue is made to wait for the ice to melt naturally.

A war of words has broken out between China and Japan over disputed islands, known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and the Diaoyu islands in China.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has described China’s move to create a new “air defence identification zone” over the territory as “dangerous”.

China has voiced anger at Japanese and US objections to the new air zone, and lodged complaints with their embassies.

The BBC’s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo and Martin Patience in Beijing assess how the dispute is viewed in their respective countries.
